Exploring Reykjavik

The city is a whole new change of scenery compared to driving in the country. There is actually civilization and buildings! Luckily our apartment is right in the center of the city so we could walk to all of the city attractions. We started with a little self guided walking tour to make sure we hit all of the major spots. About two blocks away from our apartment was the Hallgrimskirkja Church, the largest church in the country. You can’t miss the very tall clock tower. For a cheap ticket you can even ride the elevator to the top and get a 360 degree view of the city. Cities look so much cooler from the sky!

Walking father down towards the shore we saw the Prime Minister’s building, Harpa Concert Hall, and the Sun Voyager Sculpture. The Harpa Concert Hall is a really cool piece of architecture made of glass that looks really fancy. The Sun Voyager was a neat sight because it sits right on the edge of the water. The skeleton looking sculpture compliments the blue water quite nicely as it looks almost like a crab about to walk into the water. There is a trail the runs along the water, perfect for runners and bikers to take advantage of. After what felt like we had walked the entire city we got some lunch to recuperate. We found a cute cafe and had the best sandwiches to give us some energy.

Our next adventure was to find all the really awesome street art that fills the streets of Reykjavik. There were some really interesting pieces of artwork. Some comical, some out of the ordinary, and some that fit right in with the city. It was suspenseful to see the next piece of work with every new corner we turned. We then stopped at the market to get some things we needed, and of course then made a pit stop to get ice cream which was so delicious!

After some much needed naps we made our way over to the American Bar to cheer on the USWNT as they played France in the quarter finals of the Women’s World Cup! The atmosphere and fans were great at the restaurant! Americans show up even all the way in Iceland and it was awesome to see! We won by the way!!!!!!!!!
